Former European Open Champion Andrew Murray offers golf tips and advice from his base in Cheshire about the short game, chipping and saving shots around the green. Known as one of the best short game teachers in Europe Andrew Murray still competes successfully on the European Seniors tour, and fresh from shooting a seven under par 63 in the final round of the Swiss Seniors European PGA tournament, he passes on some of the secrets of the golf short game.

Andrew Murray Chipping Short Game – Tips

Andrew Murray says most club golfers automatically reach for a lofted club when chipping the ball from off the green. But if there is nothing in the way he recommends a club with less loft, like a seven iron, to help the ball roll more like a putt when it lands on the green. Although Andrew Murray gives most tuition in the Manchester area he travels the length and breadth of England organising company days and clinics to help golfers lower their scores. Although simple in its concept, he suggests trying this short game chipping drill to find out about short game club selection.

  • Take ten balls and chip from just off the green using a wedge - count how many end up within six feet of the pin.
  • Repeat the short game drill with four other clubs and see which club rolls the ball consistently closest to the flag.
  • Be adventurous which club selection when chipping – use a five wood or rescue club to see if you can get the ball to roll like a putt.

“This drill takes ten minutes to carry out, and it’ll prove to you which club gives you the best chance of getting the ball up and down in two”.

Golf Short Game Practice

Andrew Murray insists that the key to improving the short game of a golfer lies in making chipping, pitching and putting fun to practice. “Most golfers find practice around the green pretty boring, it’s essential to make it fun by competing with a friend or by setting goals. Make it fun and you will start to get up and down more often”. Certainly at the company days Andrew Murray organises emphasis is placed on having fun while learning with competitions and an assortment of interesting challenges.

Chipping Golf Lesson Tips

“When we organise company days and teach chipping and the short game” says Andrew Murray “one of the major faults we find is too much tension in a golfers grip - to have touch round the green a golfer must have ‘soft hands’”.

  • To achieve the correct tension, Andrew Murray suggests concentrating on relaxing the forearms and letting them hang naturally at address which he achieves by setting his pupils various tests.

  • Having played with the world’s best players for thirty years Andrew has amassed a catalogue of secrets and tips to save shots round the green but his number one tip is to experiment with different grip tension for different shots.
