Start the golf downswing by driving the left knee forward to keep the golf club on the inside. Use this swing drill to start the downswing transition with the left knee.

To hit good crisp iron shots, and to drive the ball powerfully off the tee, it’s imperative to transfer weight onto the left side. The correct weight transference shifts the arc of the swing forward and allows a golfer to hit down into irons and create maximum club head speed with a driver. Learn how to transfer your weight positively with a good start to the downswing.

How to Start the Downswing

The transition between backswing and downswing is possibly the most important move in the golf swing. Carried out correctly it allows the club to swing into the ball on the correct inside path, but get the move wrong and it spells disaster. Because it is such an important move there have been hundreds of articles written about this specific moment recommending many different ‘feels’ for golfers to try. Some pros are convinced they start the downswing with the hips, other are convinced it is the arms driving down that starts the downswing sequence. Following is one of the most popular techniques to start the downswing correctly.

Start Downswing Transition with Left Knee

  • For most golfers there is a momentary pause between the backswing and the start of the downswing when the body comes to a stop as the swing changes direction.
  • From this stationary position something has to start the downswing and many believe that concentrating on the left knee makes the club fall into the right inside slot on the downswing.
  • If a golfer watches the swing of a good player on video, it is quite clear how the left knee separates from the right knee as it leads the weight sfift.
  • The gap between the knees becomes greater at the start of the downswing.

Drill to Start the Downswing with the Left Knee

  • Find a place to do some practice swings, take up your stance, and place a football between your knees.
  • On the backswing the football should stay in place, but on the downswing, as the left knee starts driving towards the target the football should drop down as the gap between the knees extends.
  • This move makes the lower body start the downswing sequence making sure the shoulders stay passive with the club consequently dropping down on the inside.
  • After you have got used to some practice swings try hitting some balls. Use a seven iron at first to warm up, but as your confidence grows you can use any club whith this drill.
