Golf swing plane is variable and can be adjusted to maximise power and accuracy depending on the physique of the golfer. Understand which swing plane is best for you.
Swing plane isn’t simply dictated by how tall a golfer is. Swing plane can be predetermined to create more power or accuracy. An upright swing, with a high hand action, will generally hit the ball more accurately as the swing path stays on the ball target line for longer. A flat swing, where there is more emphasis on body action, may well create more club head speed but the club face doesn’t travel along the ball target line for long meaning less accuracy is likely. Try a different swing plane to see if an upright or flat swing suits you best.
Flat Swing Plane Drill
A flat swing means the arms travel round the body. To try a flat swing all a golfer has to do is keep the arms and shoulders working together on the takeaway.
To help get the feeling, pin a towel across your chest using your upper arms and keep it there during your backswing. At the top of the backswing keep the right elbow close to the body.
The power in the golf swing will now come from the speed of your turn back and forwards.
The golfers who benefit most from a flatter swing are people with fit strong stomach muscles.
Rather than swinging round with the shoulders, half way back the arms change plane and start to rise up.
To achieve this, put a golf ball under your right arm and make a swing, but half way back make the arms swing up.
If you do this correctly a gap will appear under your right arm and the ball will fall out. The larger the gap you make, the more upright the swing will become.
Changing Swing Plane
The most important thing to remember when trying various swing plane positions is that both sides of the swing must match up.
A flat, or rounder backswing means the follow through or finish position must also be flat . As the right arm stays close to the body on the backswing, the left arm should remain close to the side on the follow through.
In the follow through position of an upright swing the left arm raises into the air just as the right did on the backswing. Both sides of the swing must balance like a chemical equation.
