Every golfer knows that if you want to lower scores, practising the short game is essential. But standing alone on the chipping green can become boring. If you can find a friend to practise with and compete against, it can become good fun and more rewarding. Practice Chipping CompetitionStart off with a straightforward chip and run from say twenty yards. Take it in turns to see who can get the ball closest to the hole, and make the winner the first one to reach ten. Even though it’s a fun competiton you will be simulating pressure shots on the course. As a final duel, pick out a hole and see who can get the ball up and down in two, using your putter to hole out. Even have a small wager on it to raise the pressure. Remember to make the practise fun, so pick out a really difficult chip where you need to negotiate a slope. Pitching PracticeRather than a normal pitch try something more exciting. If there is a bunker, go to the far side and see who can hit most shots out of ten over the trap onto the green. Then maybe try some shocking lies, like out of a divot or rough. Finally, just as in the putting competition, pick one particular difficult lie, and see who can get the ball into the hole in the fewest shots. The more varied the shots the more benefit you will enjoy. Parachute LobMake sure there is nothing behind the green in case you thin the ball, but why not try the shot Tiger and Phil Mickelson play so well. Open up the clubface, take a full swing and try to cut under the ball sending it high into the air. See who can stop it quickest on the green. If there is a small bush around, put the ball on one side, quite close up, and see who can hit it over. If both of you manage it, move closer and closer until one fails. The other wins! Trick ShotsDuring the course of a round, a player often faces shots they have never encountered before. Maybe a horrid lie, or a shot with a restricted back swing, or even a left handed shot. Take it in turns to find the most outrageous and then see who can move the ball onto the green. Being able to adapt to difficult situations will increase you club head control and will help develop touch. All the time you are trying these different skills you are educating your hands to control the club. Bunker ShotsTry some basic shots first and see who can get the ball out closest to the hole, but then try different lies. Bury the odd shot near the back lip, where you will have to adjust your stance and swing to be able to extract the ball. These difficult shots will help you develop crucial balance that you will never get from hitting shots on the range where the lies are always flat. Remember make your short game practise fun, to enjoy maximum benefit. Related Article - How to Practise Golf and Fix own Swing - PGA Tip
