Aim of the clubface at address has a direct influence on the swing path on the backswing. Aim the clubface at the target to groove a better backswing takeaway path.
No matter what sport is involved, if an object is being propelled towards a target, correct aim is vital. Whether it is pool, tennis, shooting or golf if you aim incorrectly the chance of hitting the target is dramatically reduced. Yet considering aim is the most basic and important fundamental of a golf swing it is surprising how many club golfers struggle to aim correctly. Try these tips to help you aim the clubface at the target and start build a better backswing.
Clubface Aim Check
Over a period of time our eyes start to become deceived, what a golfer considers to be square is often aiming way off line. Every professional golfer regularly checks their alignment in the address position and in particular the alignment of the clubface.
Stand to the ball with a seven iron and get ready to hit a shot at a target.
Just before you start the backswing look down at the club face and, holding the club firm to make sure it does not change angles, move your body round so you can look at the club face from behind.
This allows you to accurately see where the face is aiming. Be honest with your self and estimate whether it’s five, ten or twenty yards out.
Club Head Aim and Influence on Swing Path
Most golfers would like to swing the golf club better and it’s immediately possible with better alignment. If the clubface is aiming left of target, or closed, in all likelihood the golfer will start the backswing on the outside, at right angles to where the face is aiming.
Likewise, if the club head is aiming to the right, the golfer will take the club away on a swing path that is too inside. Both of these takeaways mean the golfer has to make complicated adjustments during the swing not only to come into the ball on the correct line but also to square up the blade through impact.
Aim Correctly for a Simple Swing
Most golfers like to think there is a magic move or secret to their golf that, once found, will transform their golf game. Unfortunately that is rarely the case, more often it is attention to detail and grooving the basics that make a difference.
If a golfer can find a way to aim more accurately it will definitely improve their chances of hitting the ball straighter more often.
A good position of the clubface and correct alainment will mean the correct swing path away from the ball which will require no compliceted adjustments during the swing.
How to Aim or Position the Clubface Correctly
Even though you are now aware your alignment isn’t correct, the best way to ensure the correct position of the clubface is to draw a line on the ball, which you point at the target.
All you have to do then is adjust the clubface so it is positioned at right angles to the line.
This is allowed on the greens when putting and on all tee shots on the golf course even in competition.
Rather than aiming at a distant target it is much easier to line up the clubface to the ball.
Once you have lined up do not let the face change when you glance up at the target. Trust the new look to your stance, even if it looks strange and wait for your swing path to adapt to your correct alignment.
