Golf drill to perfect the golf swing. Use this swing drill to train the hand release position, the swing plane and the arm rotation. Learn the feel of the perfect swing.

The following drill is a perfect way to groove correct swing mechanics and technique. It can be carried out at any time, anywhere, and helps train a golfer to make the correct arm rotation in the golf swing that is responsible for swing plane and hand release at impact.

Golf Swing Drill for Perfect Swing

  • Stand with your feet apart and take up an imaginary stance but without a club.
  • Letting your arms hang naturally in front of you put your hands together so the palms are facing each other.
  • During this exercise the hands must stay in exactly this position and not come apart from each other. If the hands separate in any way the drill will not groove the perfect mechanics.
  • When ready make a practice swing.
  • Notice how the arms rotate as you swing back as this is the only way to keep the hands together and keep the left arm straight, just as in the perfect swing.
  • You will probably not be able to make a full swing but three quarters back is sufficient to train the arms.
  • At the finish position notice how the elbows are the same distance apart as they were during the whole swing. This is how the arms work in a perfect swing.

How this Swing Drill Perfects Plane and Hand Release

  • In a normal swing the amount of arm rotation on the backswing is responsible for the swing plane. On the downswing, swing plane is responsible for hand action and release through the ball.
  • This exercise makes the arms rotate the correct amount on the backswing so they find the right plane of the swing. On the downswing because the arms are in the perfect position, the hands are in the correct position to release and rotate through impact to hit a straight shot.
  • Practicing this drill will give the golfer the correct feel of the perfect swing.

How to Practice the Perfect Swing

  • When you next hit balls on the range use this drill as an integral part of learning to swing the club into the right positions.
  • Before you start hitting balls make ten practice swings with your hands together.
  • When you are ready to hit balls, try to retain the same feeling during the swing of how the arms work in the drill.
  • If in doubt, concentrate on the elbows staying the same distance apart throughout the swing from the address position, right the way through to the finish.
