Generate more power and club head speed with this simple drill for a more compact dynamic swing. Hit the golf ball further with more power and more golf club head speed.
To be able to hit he ball further is a great asset for any golfer. Hitting long drives and accurate penetrating iron shots can reduce even a long golf course to a more manageable length. Often a golfer tries to hit the ball farther by simply hitting harder, but that often leads to mis hits and wayward shots. Use this swing drill to improve your swing mechanics, technique and power to hit the ball consistently farther and straighter.
Golf Swing Drill for Power and Club Head Speed
This particular drill or exercise was originally made famous by Ben Hogan in his well known book the Modern Fundamentals. When Hogan used this drill to build up his own power and technique he used a practice ball bag full of balls, but for the sake of this exercise, the practice bag will be replaced by a football.
Take a football outside and take up your normal stance aiming at an imaginary target, but instead of holding a golf club place you hands either side of the football.
Keeping a firm hold of the ball make a full backswing and then as you swing down, and come into impact, release the ball and throw it out towards your imaginary target. Let your body carry on to a full finish.
Although this exercise is relatively easy to carry out it involves many individual parts of the swing and will train better swing mechanics. With the weight of the ball it will also build up your golfing muscles for more power and club head speed.
How this Drill Improves your Swing
The simplicity of the stance when holding the football should be copied when you hold a club. Although your hands grip the club differently the arms should hang down in the same way as when you hold the football.
On the backswing the elbows should stay the same distance apart as they are at address. This keeps the swing connected and forces the arms to rotate the correct amount to find the perfect swing plane.
At impact releasing and throwing the ball forward is not as easy as it may seem. It requires the same timing as releasing the golf club into the back of the ball.
Use this exercise and the added weight of the ball to build up your core strength for more power and club head speed.
