Power draw shots are valuable golf shots to hit. A driving power iron to draw and crush the ball needs strength and good technique. Learn how to hit power draw shots

There are few shots in golf that give as much satisfaction as much as a crushed power draw. Watching the ball drive through the air penetrating the wind like a missile is very satisfying indeed. But hitting a power draw is not just about raw power. After all, most golfers who hit really hard are mainly prone to slicing. Hitting a power draw is predominantly about the correct angle of attack. Learn that first and club head speed for a crushed power draw will follow.

Power Draw Angle of Attack

  • The swing path must be coming from the inside, which is set up by turning well on the back swing. Coiling the upper body over the legs contains speed you need to hit a power draw.

  • The arms must start the downswing. While a golfer understandably wants to inject immediate power into the downswing, when hitting a power draw it is essential that the arms start down in the right slot. If a golfer jerks from the top the arms are pulled onto the outside and all speed will be lost.

  • At the start of the downswing the right foot has to be ready to drive the body forward onto the front foot. Distance, when hitting the golf ball, is a combination of club head speed and the mass behind it. To hit a power draw a golfer must positively transfer weight onto the front foot so the body mass is helping to crush the ball.

  • At the moment of impact the left face cheek must be looking at the ball, not the right. This means the head is anchored correctly and is able to contain the energy of the shoulders trying to spin open.

  • To maximise power every muscle must be working in harmony. If any group of muscles work inefficiently then it leads to a loss of acceleration. To make sure the muscles drive forward correctly make sure you swing to a full finish when trying to crush the ball.

  • The core muscles that keep the top half driving are your tummy muscles. Unfortunately, to hit a power draw, some training needs to be carried out and mainly it is the lower back and tummy muscles that need strengthening.

  • Finally, to hit the ball hard and crush out a power draw there can be no room for self-doubt. For powerful shots you have to fit yourself into the power mode. Think power and you will hit with power.
