Hybrids and rescue clubs require different swing technique to irons or fairway woods. Learn to hit different shots by adjusting stance. How to hit hybrids to save shots.
Hybrid and rescue clubs have revolutionised shots from the fairway over the last two decades. No longer do golfers have to struggle with long irons, where even getting the ball airborne was a feat. Nowadays, the low centre of gravity in a hybrid club enables a golfer to get the ball up in the air quickly and hit high shots into the greens. Learn how to get the most from your hybrids and rescue clubs.
Hybrid Ball Position
With a fairway wood a golfer can’t have the ball too far back in the stance. But with hybrids, which are much more versitile, the ball can be taken opposite the right foot.
The lower sweet spot enables the golfer to be able to get the ball airborne even though it’s back in the stance. With the ball back, not only will you get the ball airborne, but also the downward blow onto the ball will impart valuable backspin to stop the ball quickly when it lands on the green.
Experiment with different ball positions forward and back and be willing to exaggerate. Take a few shots from outside the right foot to see what happens to the ball. A very low shot can be useful for getting out of trouble.
Try five shots from off the front foot, five from the middle and five from off the back foot. Just remember that when you alter the ball position your shoulder alignment should still be aiming at the target.
Hybrid and Rescue Swing
When the sweet spot is low down on a club it enables a golfer to get the ball up quickly. Rather than struggling to hit the ball into the air, a low sweet spot allows a golfer to hit different shots with minor swing changes. When the sweet spot is higher on the face the ball has to be swept off the ground at the bottom of the swing arc. But with a hybrid you can hit down onto the ball and it will still get airborne. By changing the angle of attack you will be able to hit different shots.
One of the quickest ways to change the angle of attack into the ball is by gripping down the club. This is a time to experiment, but, at an inch a time, grip down the club to see what affect it has on the ball. As you grip down you will naturally have a steeper swing that will impart more backspin.
It is also worth experimenting with the width of your stance. A narrow stance gripping down the club will hit the ball differently than from a wide stance gripping at the top of the club.
The hybrid and rescue clubs are the most versatile ever made, Not only can you hit high shots into the green but even the top pros now regularly use them to hit chip shots from off the green. More than with any other club in the bag it is time to experiment and discover what your hybrid can do.
