But practicing with a long iron can help improve the golfers angle of attack into the ball. Learn to sweep long irons off the grass to improve your driving swing.
Practice Long Irons to Improve Driver Swing
Modern golf equipment makes it much easier to hit the ball into the air. It means a golfer can hit down on a shot and still get the ball airborne. With a long iron that would be impossible unless the golfer had the power of a pro. But if a golfer only hits down into the ball it starts to limit the shots he can hit.
By practicing with a long iron a golfer must start to sweep the ball off the grass. With a sweeping action a golfer utilises every degree of loft on the club making the angle of attack responsible for the height of the shot and not the spin imparted when weight is at the bottom.
To hit a driver well the golfer must sweep the ball off the tee not hit down into it. But if you hit down into every other club it makes it difficult to adapt. By learning to hit a long iron into the air, with a sweeping action, even though you have no intention of using one on the golf course, it will help remind a golfer what to do when hitting a driver off the tee.
Practice with a Three Iron
Take a three iron and a seven iron and a few balls onto the range.
Warm up hitting a few normal shots with the seven iron.
When warmed up try to hit a few gentle shots off the ground with the three iron.
It is important not to start thrashing at the ball, as a sweeping action will get the ball airborne.
Start off hitting at three quarter power trying to glance the club off the ground.
If you hit down into the shot not only will the downward blow negate the degrees of loft on the three iron but you will feel a jarring when the club hits the ground.
Try to imagine the club head as a plane coming into land. The angle of attack must not be too steep or the plane would crash.
The club should mildly bruise the ground not dig into it.
Finally when you start getting the odd shot airborne try hitting a few off the grass.
If you can improve your long irons, even though you do not intend to use them on the course, it will help other departments of the game by teaching you to come into the ball with a shallow angle of attack. Practice with lng irons to improve your driving.
