In to Out Golf Swing to Draw Golf Ball and Strike Better Golf Shots

To swing inside out, or in-to-out, you have to swing the club inside on the backswing then out to the target on the downswing. Swing inside out to draw the golf ball.

Most golfers would like to have an inside out golf swing as it is one of the most effective swing shapes. An inside out swing path hits a draw which is the shot sought after by many club golfers. There are two jobs a golfer has to do to achieve an inside out swing. First the golfer must make enough space on the backswing to be able to swing the club back on the inside. Then a golfer has to pacify the shoulders from swinging open on the downswing.

Being able to swing back on the inside is mainly down to creating enough space. If any part of the body gets in the way the golfer has no alternative but to swing outside. Follow these vital steps at address and in the take away to make sure the club swings inside on the backswing.

Stance for an Inside Out Draw Swing

  • Tilt the head to the right at address. This helps the shoulders to turn correctly.
  • Make sure the grip is correct. If the right hand is on too weak it makes the right arm too straight and blocks the takeaway.
  • Have the right shoulder lower than the left in the address position. Because the right hand is below the left the right shoulder should be lower than the left. If the left shoulder gets too high it leads to a tilt on the backswing. This makes the arms rise too steep and outside.
  • Make sure a line across your arms points to the right of target. If you picked up your arms to shoulder height, without adjusting the grip, a golfer should be able to balance a tray of drinks on the arms.

Backswing for an Inside Out Swing

Once you have set up correctly because the swing is a chain reaction it is much easier for a golfer to swing the club back on the inside. Following are swing checks to make sure the club swings back correctly.

  • Start the swing off by turning the body. Make sure you turn the right hip out of the way. Both Nicklaus and Faldo said they felt the backswing started with the right hip turning.
  • Complete the shoulder turn. If the club swing back on the right path it is normally a lack of turn that causes problems later in the backswing. With the head turned to the right it should help a deeper turn.
  • Make sure the club points to the right of target at the top. Where the club points to dictates the line of the swing.

Inside out Downswing

If the club is in the right position at the top the only job a golfer has to do is make sure the downswing stays on the inside. Nearly always it is the shoulders that cause the club to come outside. When this happens the right hip follows the shoulders and the right leg is pulled out. To make sure the shoulders stay passive, start slowly from the top and as momentum builds up slide the right foot across to the left. This ensures the shoulders don’t spin open and the weight transfers across to the left side correctly for an inside out swing path.
