Technique of Golf Pro Swing for Longer Golf Drives Like Top Golf Pro

Jun 2, 2009 John Hoskison

Swing the golf club like a golf pro by understanding pro golf swing technique. Drive golf ball longer and straighter by copying the swing of a top playing golf pro.

Although basic golf swing mechanics haven’t changed since Ben Hogan wrote the famous book ‘the Modern Fundamentals’ the golf swing has evolved into a more powerful action that uses nearly every muscle in the body. Learn how to maximise your power and hit the ball like a pro by following the important steps of the swing.

Mechanics of Pro Swing - Stance

Every pro spends time making sure their grip and set up are correct. If you want to build a good swing the better you can stand to the ball the easier it becomes.

  • The grip must be correct as it directly affects tension in the arms. If the hands are on the club the wrong way, the arms will not be relaxed enough to respond to the body turning. There is an old saying that a golfer should hold the club no harder than they would hold a small bird in their hands, without hurting it.

  • The width of stance has become wider over the years. Nowadays the emphasis on creating power is torque, the upper body winds up over the lower half like a spring. The legs have to be set athletically, and wide enough, to resist the turning of the upper body. At address a golfer should have such a solid base it should be impossible for someone to walk up and push them over from any direction.

  • The head must be set at the correct angle. If the chin is too low and close to the chest it will restrict the body turn. Keep the head up and turned slightly to the right. This will add to the resistance at impact.

Backswing Mechanics

  • The swing starts off with a turning of the upper body that pulls the arms and hands away from the ball, the right leg, firmly planted at address, resists. It is important to stress the need for having warmed up the body with exercise.

  • As momentum builds the wrists hinge the club onto plane and the backswing is completed with a further turn of the upper body over the hips. At the top of the swing maximum torque has been created, the body is almost impossibly wound up. To carry this out effectively the tummy muscles have to be strong. That’s why pros do lots of sit up’s in their everyday routine.
The Downswing

All the important work has been done on the backswing. If the golfer is in a good position at the top of the swing they will be able to unleash the torque built up with full commitment to the finish position. There is no hitting 'at' the ball, rather the ball gets in the way of the swing.

Summary

To swing like a pro, with dynamic mechanics, the stance becomes even more vital than ever. With little pause at the top of the swing, because of the torque built up, if the golfer is not in the correct position there is hardly any time to make adjustments.

  • Spend time on the grip and experiment with different pressures to relax the arms

  • Create a firm base with a good leg set

  • Turn away from the ball with the lower half resisting

  • Commit to a full finish
