Learning how to win on the golf course is not just about good technique. No matter how good a golfer swings the club, with poor preparation a golfer can turn a potential win into defeat. Being able to win at golf starts well before a golfer turns up to play a match, winning starts the day before. Ask most golfers, who ‘close out’ well, and they will say it’s attention to detail in preparation that’s the first step to being able to win at golf

Prepare to Win at Golf the Day Before

The following preparation should be second nature for a keen golfer, but it is staggering how many golfers, keen on winning a match, turn up flustered and hurried because they haven’t prepared properly and have forgotten essential equipment..

  • Study the weather forecast the day before to make sure rain is not likely. If it is, make sure you have packed an umbrella, waterproofs and a hood for the bag. Have a few towels packed away just in case.

  • Make sure you have the right clubs for the day, clean them properly and get all the dirt and grass out of the grooves. If it’s going to be windy, maybe take out a driver with less loft. Think about the clubs that might suit the conditions.

  • Plan what you are going to wear the night before. This might sound way over the top, but on the day of a match, you don’t want to get up and find the pair of warm trousers you were thinking of wearing are in the wash.

  • If you are teeing up early the next day, make sure you set the alarm early enough to give yourself time to hit some balls on the range, don’t turn up at the last minute.
Prepare to Win When you Wake Up

The timing of your swing, and general tempo of the day, can be set by how you get out of bed in the morning. If you hurry, gobble down breakfast and rush to the course you are not giving yourself the best chance of playing well. From the moment you get up you should be pacing yourself. Even the music you play in the car, as you drive to the course, can have an effect on your tempo for the day. Not too much heavy rock!

  • Make sure you hit some warm up balls when you get to the course - take your time.
  • Stretch first to unwind the muscles
  • Work through the bag
  • Find a swing thought for the day to focus on for the whole round
  • Hit some chips on the practice chipping green, and make sure the grooves are clean afterwards.
  • Hit some putts on the putting green to find the pace of the greens

Find out how long it takes you to warm up properly and make sure you allow yourself that time for every match.

Prepare to Win at Golf List

These have been basic suggestions on how to win at golf by preparing properly but you should make up your own list. Every golfer is different and you should find the best routine for yourself. Knowing you have done everything possible to win helps relaxation. Prepare properly to win at golf.
