Building perfect technique and mechanics in any sport requires an understanding of the individual parts and positions that make up the whole action. Without an understanding of where the golf club should be at certain times during the swing it is very difficult to build a consistent swing that works shot after shot. Follow these tips and build a perfect swing you can trust.

Golf Tips to Improve Golf Swing Mechanics

Once a golfer has learned to stand to the ball correctly there are five important positions that a golfer has to swing through to help build perfect swing technique.

  • Half way in the backswing
  • Top of the backswing
  • Half way on the downswing
  • Golf swing impact position
  • Finish position

Perfect Swing Positions - Half Way on Backswing

  • The shaft of the club should be pointing at the ball to make sure the club is in the correct swing plane.
  • Learn to swing slowly into this position and hold it for several seconds. Repeat the drill ten times.

Perfect Swing Mechanics - Top of Backswing

The top of the backswing is a fail-safe position. Even if you have made a mistake half way back, by learning where the club should be at the top of the swing a golfer can achieve a perfect position to start the downswing.

  • The clubface should be at 45 degrees with the toe pointing mid way between the sky and the ground.
  • The shoulders should have turned so the left shoulder is underneath the chin.
  • The left arm should be straight.
  • Practice this position until you can hold it still for the count of three. This will give strong feedback to where the club would be at the top of the backswing when you make a proper swing.

Build a Consistent Half Way Down Position

Half way down the club should be travelling through an almost identical position it swung though on the way back. .

  • The clubface should be vertical and the shaft should be pointing at the ball. Half way down the golfers weight should have transferred onto the left leg.

The Perfect Swing Impact Position

Even if all the other positions are slightly out during the golf swing by learning the correct mechanics of the golf swing impact position all mistakes can be over ridden.

  • The club must be square at impact with the clubface pointing at the target.
  • The shoulders must be pointing at the target.
  • The left cheek on the face of a golfer must point at the ball and be tilted slightly back as this creates resistance and gives a golfer something to hit against.
  • Most body weight must be on the left foot.

The Perfect Golf Swing Finish Position

  • Consistent golf shots can be achieved by finishing off the swing correctly with balance.
  • In the perfect swing finish the golfers shoulders and hips should be pointing at the flag. Make sure your belt buckle faces the target.
  • The elbows of the golfer should be the same distance apart they were during the rest of the swing and not splayed apart.
  • The right heel should be off the ground with the sole pointing away from the target as this ensures the correct weight transference.
