Improve natural golf swing and club head speed by clapping, or by tossing pancakes. How about dancing to some 60's records to give you an extra twenty yards off the tee.

Every day people instinctively use the skills that are required for good golf shots, while carrying out everyday tasks at home. Yet put a golf club in their hands, and often their confidence disappears and their natural golf ability evaporates - they lose clubhead speed and control.

This is called 'paralysis through analysis'. Too much thought and information have made it impossible to swing naturally. There is no point in them hitting golf balls on the range, they will only be practising faults. To improve ball striking, increase clubhead speed and lower scores they need to unlock their natural golf ability.

Natural Timing for Long Straight Shots

Any swing will work if it is timed correctly, and a well-timed swing hits the ball straight and long. If a golfer is hitting the golf ball badly and not improving, temporarily they need to forget what they’ve learned in golf lessons, and instead, learn to relax on the course, start having some fun and start to trust their natural golf instincts.

Everyday tasks like clapping, dancing, tossing a pancake, and even swatting flies require the same skills for hitting good shots, timing, rhythm, coordination and speed. And you can hone these golfing skills at home, without the frustration and stress of hitting practise balls badly at the range.

For example, clapping requires the right hand to square up using exactly the same muscles as when bringing the golf club head squarely into the ball. And hands up those of you who can’t clap? Just as in tennis where the racket is an extension of the hand, so is the golf club for golfers. If you can clap you can hit a golf ball straight.

Exercises for Clubhead Speed and Control

  • Clapping - squaring up the hands in exactly the same way as when bringing the clubface squarely into the ball.

When you next hit a golf ball, picture the ball as your left hand and the club head as your right hand. Then just clap them together

  • Tossing a pancake – requires the same timing as a good golf shot. Golfers use centrifugal force to fire the ball off, the same physical law as when you throw up a pancake.

When you next hit a golf ball picture holding a frying pan and then, using your wrists, fling the pancake against the wall, just like in a golf swing

  • Dancing to 'The Twist’ - promotes the same dynamic leg and hip action as in the golf swing.

When you next hit a golf ball try singing the song to yourself and feel the rhythm in your hips and legs for a better golf leg action

  • Swatting flies - Creating coordinated speed with your arms and shoulders.

When you next hit a golf ball try to imagine the ‘swoosh’ of the fly swatter as you accelerate the golf club at the golf ball.

Trust your Natural Golf Swing

Remember, you carry out complex actions everyday using the timing and coordination necessary to hit the golf ball powerfully and straight. Focus on your natural skills at home, and then learn to use those skills when you are on the golf course.

You have the natural ability to play golf - learn how to use it!
