Turn the shoulders correctly on the backswing to swing round the body for a flat swing plane. Release the hands on a shallow inside swing path to draw the golf ball.

Many golfers would like to draw the ball but hitting a golf draw requires the golf club to come into impact from the inside. This means the club has to be swung onto the inside on the backswing, and this means the golfer has to turn the body on the backswing. Without a good turn the arms have no space to move back and round and instead travel vertically up into a steep or upright swing plane. Learn to turn the shoulders correctly to flatten the swing plane to hit a draw ball.

Flat Swing Plane to Hit a Golf Draw

  • To hit a draw shot the shoulders must turn correctly and to encourage a good turn the head must be set at the correct angle at address. Make sure the left cheek looks at the ball and the head is tilted slightly to the right. This allows the left shoulder to turn without hitting into the chin, one of the main reasons for a poor turn.
  • Set the right foot out, away from the target instead of at right angles to it. This allows the hips to turn freely on the backswing which allows the shoulders to turn fully.
  • In golf magazines hip resistance on the backswing is often recommended but this is only for superb supple athletes who have to try to restrict their turns. For most golfers the right foot should be turned slightly out.

Swing Thoughts for a Good Turn to Hit a Draw

  • It is essential for the arms to follow the shoulders on the backswing to flatten out the swing plane so a golfer can hit the ball from the inside. A useful tip is to use a towel pinned underneath the armpits to secure the arms to the chest. Try hitting a few gentle shots with the towel under the arms to feel the arms and shoulders turning together.

  • If you have turned correctly with the arms following the shoulders a golfer should be in position to attack the ball on the downswing and release te hands from an inside flat shallow angle. From the top of the backswing the only thing that can go wrong is if the shoulders spin open at the start of the downswing pushing the swing path onto the outside, a move called coming over the top.
Start the Downswing with the Arms

  • The downswing must be started smoothly and slowly. Too fast and jerky from the top will allow the shoulders to become too active.
  • To keep the swing plane shallow and from the inside, feel as though the arms are swinging down with the shoulders remaining passive. This might seem contrary to many articles, which advocate leading with the body, but for most golfers trying to start the downswing with the hips or body immediately throws the club onto the outside.
  • One way to ensure the club swings into the ball on the correct swing path is to make sure the head stays titled away from the target on the downswing. This secures the body and gives the golfer something to release against at impact.
