How to Swing Naturally, John Hoskison
Use a natural golf swing to hit an iron. A golfer can often get confused with too much theory and lose his natural swing. Swing naturally and use hands to release a club.

If you’re a keen golfer who wants to improve you will have probably investigated and read many articles about how to swing the club better. But filling the head with too much theory can sometimes have a detrimental affect on a golfer. Rather than making a fluent pass at the ball with a fast natural hand release the swing becomes stilted and laboured, club head speed is lost and with it a good solid strike. Learn to make a natural swing to hit better drives and crisp iron shots.

Natural Swing Drills to Hit Drives and Irons Better

It is clearly visible when a golfer has become confused about how to swing the club. Look at the people you play with. There are bound to be one or two who stand forever over the ball trying to focus on one of the many thoughts bombarding their brains. For them it is impossible to swing easy and naturally, and it is better not to get caught in that trap. Try these exercises on the range to cultivate a more natural easy swing to release correctly and strike the ball better.

  • Take ten balls and get ready to hit one of them, but rather than standing to the ball with the club stationary and grounded, start the swing with the club off the ground and above the ball. At no time become stationary before swinging away. This reduces tension and promotes a much smoother takeaway.

  • It might sound crazy but try hitting a few balls singing a song to yourself. This will help put rhythm into the swing. No matter how bad a golf swing is, if you swing with rhythm the swing will operate much more efficiently.

  • On the backswing pick your left foot off the ground and then as you start the downswing replant it. As you come through the ball let your right foot come off the ground. This will get the feet working. Jack Nicklaus said he could recognise a good golfer just by the way the feet are used. A complicated contrived swing lacks footwork and a smooth leg action.

  • This is a very good drill but requires some faith. Take three balls and put them in a line two inches apart towards you.Hit the first one then without stopping swing again and again hitting the other two. This keep the swing fluid and very quickly you will find you strike all three balls pretty well. This exercise promotes a natural swinging action without the golfer making bad moves to disrupt the natural swing orbit.
Try these drills without worrying how you hit the ball, initially that is unimportant, the primary goal is to feel a more natural swing. Once you have practised these a few times, try to incorporate the feel of a more natural easy swing when you actually hit the ball and you should find you hit the ball better.
