Perfect Technique, Swing Plane for Power, Accuracy and Pure Striking

Jul 10, 2009 John Hoskison

An simple explanation of the perfect golf swing plane. Understand the perfect golf swing and how it works to strike pure golf shots with maximum golf clubhead speed.

All golf swings are different, but the top players with the best swings have two things in common: they try to swing the club in plane, and online on the backswing. Only a machine however could achieve this all the time, and that is why golfers, even the top ones, are prone to wayward shots. Following is a simple explanation why the best swings, the closest to the perfect swing, hit the most accurate and the longest shots.

Example of Perfect Swing Technique

Imagine going to a fun fair where there is the traditional game to test power and strength, where the strong men swing a sledge hammer down to try to ring the bell above. The harder they bring the hammer down the higher they score. This action shows exactly what is required to build a perfect swing.

For this explanation imagine the man holding the sledgehammer is going to bring it down to hit a large nail. The first thing he does would be to aim it directly at the nail. When he is lined up correctly he would then swing the hammer up on a vertical line above his head so the shaft of the hammer points directly at the nail. From this position he would be able to pour all his energy into the downswing without any need to make adjustments. This action demonstrates the simplest up and down action where the hammer is in plane and on line.

Now imagine if the man didn’t bother to line up the hammer accurately with the nail. As he swings the hammer back it is off line so he needs to make an adjustment. But as he tries to get the hammer back on line the weight of it means he over compensates and at the top of the swing the hammer is not pointing at the nail, it is pointing six inches to the right. If the man pours all his power into the downswing from this position he would miss the nail completely, so he has to start the downswing with a slow adjustment sacrificing power to find the correct line. The bigger the adjustment he has to make the more power he loses.

The perfect swing demands a perfect top of the backswing position where a golfer can accelerate immediately without any need to make adjustments.

The Perfect Golf Swing

  • The perfect swing starts off with the correct set up to help the golfer swing on line and in plane.
  • Halfway back the golfer swings the club onto plane where the shaft points towards the ball.
  • At the top of the swing the club is still on plane and is pointing at the target.
  • From this perfect top of the backswing position the golfer can accelerate immediately and pour all his effort into creating clubhead speed.

Why Golf is So Difficult

Golf is a difficult game because golfers are not able to stand to the ball in the same way as the hammer man does. Because a golfer stands at an angle to the ball he has to find the perfect plane mid swing. This is why golf is so difficult. If the perfect plane is not found, the swing becomes a series of complicated movements to try to get the club back on line. The more complex the necessary movement the more power and accuracy are sacrificed. That is why the best swings hit the ball accurately and with most power. The perfect swing has the most club head speed.

A pro keeps the golf club on plane throughout the swing. But the club of a twenty four-handicap golfer may well snake all over the place from one side of the plane to the other. Learn to find the plane half way back to improve your golf and help get nearer a perfect golf swing.
