To improve any skill requires mastering the basics, and with regards to golf the most basic shot is a chip shot. Because the golf swing is a chain reaction, if you can develop a good chipping action automatically you will improve your full driver swing. The bonus is rather than having to find a golf driving range you can do this at home.

Practice Chips to Train your Hands

It might sound simplistic but learning to hit a chip shot straight means you are training your hands to square up the club face at impact. Even though it’s only a small shot the muscles in your arms fire in the same way as they do when you have a full swing, so educating your hands on a chip shot will mean they are more capable of squaring up the club face when you drive the ball..

The reason golfers tend not to practise chipping is they fail to appreciate the close relationship between a chip and full golf swing. Whether it’s a small gentle shot or a full drive, the muscles needed to square up the club head are the same.

How to Practice Chipping for Straighter Drives

If you miss full golf shots to the left or right and can't cure the fault, aim your chip shots at a specific target and learn to hit the ball, at will, either side by adjusting the club head at impact with your hands. This sounds very simple but it will educate your hands to have control over the club head which will enable you to improve your swing and hit better golf shots more consistently.

Once you have learned how to direct a chip the next step would be to increase the power to a small pitch shot, maybe twenty yards further. As you increase the power your swing will become longer, but the muscles in your body and arms will still be firing in the same sequence.

The key to this exercise is to constantly maintain control as you increase the length of the swing. At some point your ability to direct the ball will evaporate, at that time you should revert back to the previous distance and master that before increasing length again. Do not rush to hit full shots, this ia an exercise to build up to a full shot, in the same way practising the scales on the piano is building up to play a full piece.

If you can master hitting a chip shot straight, followed by a pitch shot to either side of the target, you will find it much easier to drive the ball onto the fairway ,and in turn, you will lower your scores.Related Article - Fun Short Game Practise - PGA Tip or Understand the Perfect Golf Swing
