Practice putting drills for better putting. Putt better and gain confidence on the greens, lower scores and take pressure off your long game. Putt well to save shots.

If you can learn to putt well and hole out consistently from short distance it will dramatically change your golf game. There is nothing worse than missing short putts to destroy confidence. Practice these three drills at home, or on the putting green, to develop a stroke you can trust.

Practice Putting Drills for A Pure Stroke

  • Striking putts well is vital if you want to putt more consistently and although this is a well-known drill it is rarely practiced by club golfers. As much as it is important to explain the mechanics of the drill, it is also important to stress how vital it is for you to practice this regularly, rather than just once for five minutes.
  • Find three balls and draw a line completely round the ‘equator’ of each one. The putting drill requires you to place the ball on the ground with the line vertical so that when you strike the ball you hit the line.
  • If you have a pure stroke the line will stay vertical as it rolls to the hole, but should you have a poor stroke the vertical line will become distorted and wobble. A poor stroke means a glancing blow across the ball, effectively putting sidespin on the ball. It is impossible to hole out consistently with a glancing blow.
  • Learn to hole out ten times from five feet making sure the line stays upright to develop a pure stroke.

Hole Pressure Putts

If you are keen to improve your putting unfortunately it is necessary to practise. Somehow you have to find a way to simulate the pressure you will feel when facing that tough four footer to win the monthly medal.

The answer is simple, find yourself a four foot putt and keep putting until you can hole out fifty on the trot. There is no doubt every golfer reading this will think this old news, unfortunately there is no other way. It all depends whether you want to really improve or not. The pressure of a short putt on the course can be simulated.

Holing twenty short putts is no problem, when you get to thirty-five you become conscious you don’t want to miss, at forty-five you will be nervous. Go and try it!

Putting Distance Control

Put down three balls on the carpet at home or onto the green. Hit one ball, any distance you like – say twenty feet. Put the next ball down and try to roll it slightly further, maybe a few inches but not five feet. Then put the last ball down and make sure it comes up short of the first ball.

This exercise teaches you a feel for distance and is a proven drill for gauging how hard to hit a putt.

Practice these three drills and you will develop a pure stroke, gain confidence to hole out those pressure putts and control your distance. If you can improve your putting you will take pressure off your long game and you will lower your scores.
