How to feel the correct golf swing release and hand action for extra club head speed at impact Throw a golf club or stick to train the hands to release correctly.

In a recent tennis match during the U.S.Open one of the players let go of his racket by mistake when serving. The racket flew across the net and the player lost the point. But when discussing the incident in the commentary box afterwards, Annabel Croft pointed out that releasing the racket, or throwing the racket, when serving was a drill used by the Williams sisters when practising their serve. Apparently they used a stack of rackets and threw them at the target after the ball, which ensured the correct release.

  • When releasing the golf club on a full drive the concept is the same. In a good swing, if the club slipped out of the hands of a golfer, the club would fly off into the distance on line with the target.

Release the Hands by Throwing a Club

No-one would be expected to throw an expensive driver onto the range, but if there is a local field or you have a dog, try holding a stick as you would a golf club, swinging, and then at the moment of impact letting go of the stick. If you had a good swing path line the stick would fly off at the target.

Feel Golf Swing Hand Action

  • On a draw shot, the swing path must be inside to out, which would mean throwing and releasing the stick to the right. Although the swing path is to the right, the right hand would flip over at impact imparting draw spin on the ball which would curve the ball from right to left in the air.

  • With a golfer that slices, or hits the ball with an outside in swing path, the club would fly to the left of target and on the downswnig the golfer would feel the shoulders spinning open.

How to Improve Club Head Speed

  • Resistance training improves power and many top professionals swing a weighted club to build up their club head speed.

  • Using a stick that weighs more than your golf club will help to build up your core muscles and strength.

  • Imagining the club being released into the distance after the ball encourages a straighter, more natural release of the club. Try this drill to improve your golf swing release and hand action.
