Study Golf Pros While Watching TV and Improve Your Own Game

May 14, 2009 John Hoskison

Watching golf on tv is great fun, but apart from the entertainment of seeing an exciting tournament, you can improve your game by watching how the pros plan their rounds

All club golfers can improve their tactics on the course by watching how the pros negotiate their way round the course. And every golfer who wants to lower their scores can learn from how the pros approach saving shots around the green. Make your scoring more efficient by picking up the habits of the top professionals.

Watch Where the Pros Miss Greens

Professional golfers are not perfect hitting machines, and often they miss greens just like club golfers. But when they face a tough shot into a difficult target, even before they hit the shot, they are planning where to miss the green if the shot doesn’t come off perfectly.

The expression when missing the green in the wrong place is called ‘short siding yourself’. This means that the chip or pitch to the flag is made more difficult because there’s not much green to land the ball on.

When you face a tough shot, carefully look at the pin position and work out the best place to miss the green. If the pin is at the back, surrounded by thick rough, the last place you want to end up is long. Best bet would be to take one less club. If you nail the shot you might get up, but if you do miss the strike you should face a relatively easy chip shot up the green. Be conscious of where the pin is and club accordingly.

Study How the Pros Approach the Short Game

When facing a chip or pitch shot the pros usually take more time than when preparing to hit a long shot. Careful planning to get the ball near the hole needs visualisation, and often the pro will walk forward to see where he wants to land the ball.

The club golfer tends to rush these shots and often takes on the impossible. Be more careful about shot selection. Try to predict how the ball has to fly to land in the right place and then choose the club that will get the job done.

The pro also has several practise swings to ‘feel’ the distance and will not hit until they feel comfortable. There is no need to slow play down, as you are walking towards the green your imagination should already be working. Instead of chatting to your partners, give yourself thirty seconds to help plan the shot as you walk to your ball.

As long as you don’t put off your playing partners, have a few swings while you are waiting for them to play.

Watch the TV to See How the Pros Putt

Just as important as a good putting stroke is the ability to read greens. Watch how the pros prowl round the hole studying the line. Most club golfers hit the putt without having studied the green carefully and show great surprise when the ball rolls off in the wrong direction. Take your time and look at the putt from both sides of the hole. This will give you the best possible read.

Above all don’t forget to have a practise swing before every shot you play.
