What is a Golf Swing Trainer - Golf Pro Tips

Train Backswing and Downswing, Swing on Plane for Power Golf Shots

May 31, 2009 John Hoskison

Use a golf swing trainer to feel the perfect pro swing for powerful, straight shots. Learn how to swing correctly and train the golfing muscles.

Even though a golfer tries to swing the same every time they play, the feel of the swing changes from day to day. A stiff back may make it harder to turn, or the hands might feel unresponsive after a dinner party the night before. With a swing trainer, even though the body might feel different, it will be able to recapture the feel of the swing immediately. Use a swing trainer for consistent golf.

How Does a Swing Trainer Work?

  • There are several on the market, but mainly they all do the same job. They make a golfer swing on the correct swing path or plane.
  • The golfer swings the club along a metal tube that is preset to a specific angle that reflects the plane of the swing. Some are adjustable so if a golfer is particularly short or tall they should find out which ones would suit them best.
  • By swinging along this specific line, a golfer can train the muscles to remember the perfect pro swing

The Explanar Swing Trainer

  • Luther Blacklock is a pro golfer and a student of the biomechanics of the body in relation to the golf swing. Luther first developed a multi-adjustable steel hoop before the end product now known as the Explanar.
  • It had to be multi-adjustable, because the setting would be based on the line from one side of the hoop to the other, through the sternum (upper chest). This is the crossing point of the human wheel and is the reason for the Explanar logo being Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.
  • This point determines the optimum biomechanical plane for each individual and it’s on this principle that Explanar is based. This is the Swing Trainer that Butch Harmon recommends.

The Advantages of a Swing Trainer

  • The swing plane is the most important aspect of a golf swing. A swing Trainer allows a golfer to practise the perfect swing plane without worrying if they are making the right move.

  • Because of the way a traditional swing trainer is made it builds up the golfing muscles and stretches the back so a golfer can turn easier. This widens the width to the arc and without trying a golfer will hit the ball further.

  • A variety of swing trainers are used by many golf ranges and rather than having to buy one it is possible to hire one for half an hour to see if it suits you. Look up your local golf ranges on the Internet to see if they have one for hire.

Whilst the Explanar is one of the most popular there are new one coming onto the market all the time, if you are interested take your time and look through some of the options.
